Anna Fermanova: the ’sexy’ beautician who moved from Latvia to Texas
Anna Fermanova, the beautician accused of smuggling night-vision scopes from the USA to Russia, is “sexy…but not a spy”, her lawyer has said.
Anna Fermanova was arrested and news spread across the internet that another sexy Russian spy had been arrested. The arrest came so soon after Anna Chapman and her cohorts had been arrested as Russian spies. Fermanova fit the profile and her titillating pictures made for great voyeurism. But is she a Russian spy? The Latvian beautician from Plano, Texas is trying to set the record straight. Her lawyer told the Daily News the case "looks a lot worse than it really is."
"She’s a nice Jewish girl who lives with her sweet Latvian parents," said Scott Palmer, a Dallas criminal defense attorney.
"There’s no terrorism link. There’s no espionage."
Anna Fermanova made national headlines, and perhaps international headlines, by being declared to be America’s new sexy Russian spy. She was arrested earlier in the month for attempting to smuggle military-grade night-vision rifle sights to Russia without a license.
She was busting by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at New York’s JFK International airport after a confidential informant tipped off immigration agents. She had $15,000 worth of accessories in her luggage, stuffed into a pair of Ugg boots. She had $7,000 Raptor X4 Night Vision Weapons Sight and two other night-vision devices worth $4,000 each. All of it was confiscated and she was allowed to continue her flight to Moscow.
When she returned to the states earlier this month she was arrested and put on house arrest.
She has told authorities that she had the night-vision glasses for her husband to use hunting in Russia. She said she had no idea it was illegal to transport them.
Fermanova is a Naturalized American citizen. She was born in Lativa and splits her time between living with her parents in Plano, Texas (near Dallas) and in Moscow with her husband. She is 24-years-old, 5′ 6" and has a U.S. beauticians license.
