Cruise lines: No plans to cancel calls in Mexico due to swine flu

Cruise lines: No plans to cancel calls in Mexico due to swine flu – Several major cruise lines with ships calling in Mexico this week say they have no plans to cancel or alter itineraries despite global worries about a potentially deadly outbreak of swine flu in the country.

Industry giant Carnival says in a statement today it is monitoring the spread of the illness in Mexico but is going ahead with voyages scheduled to call in the country over the next few days.

Two Carnival ships, the Carnival Paradise and Elation, called at Mexico’s Catalina Island today, the line tells USA TODAY, and both ships still are scheduled to call in Ensenada, Mexico on Tuesday. Two other Carnival ships, the Carnival Inspiration and Holiday, also are scheduled to visit Mexico on Tuesday with port calls in Cozumel.

“There currently is no evidence of a swine flu pandemic, and there have been no reports of guests exhibiting symptoms of swine flu on Carnival’s ships,” the line says in the statement. “We do not anticipate that our guests’ cruise experience will be impacted by this type of illness and will not be making any adjustments to our itineraries.” (Read more: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/cruises/)

Cruise group Carnival heads FTSE losers on flu fears

Cruise operator Carnival is now leading the FTSE 100 fallers, down more than 7% in the wake of the spread of swine flu from Mexico.

The company’s shares are down 144p to £17.95, with analyst Nigel Parson saying:

“The outbreak of swine flu in Mexico revives unhappy memories of SARS that impacted the hotel and airline stocks hard in 2003. This time Carnival is the most immediately vulnerable stock as the first call of many Caribbean itineraries are to Mexican resorts and there is a public perception that ships are vulnerable to the spread of infections. If the flu spreads, then the most vulnerable hotel stock is InterContinental Hotels.

“In 2003 the hotel stocks dropped 15-20% and then recovered strongly as the disappearance of the threat of SARS coincided with an economic recovery. At this moment both the biological and economic recovery are uncertain.” (from here)
